Nutrition and growth are 2 very strong links that cannot be done
without. And
children are especially in need of good nutrition to aid
their growing body. The phrase optimum nutrition is described as eating the
proper level of nutrients, on a regular basis so as to gain the very best
results from the human body. Although every one of us needs to consume food
with high nutritional value, it is the ever developing body of children
and adolescents that need to take the right amount of food to aid their
physical and mental development.
The calorie requirements at various stages of a child's growth vary. Also these requirements vary from boys to girls. The amount of proteins, carbohydrates, fibers, vitamins, fats and minerals all needs to be in an average proportion.
But ask a parent how easy it is to feed their child with somethingnutritional and they will bite back at you. The parents need to understand that a power struggle is quite redundant here. It is not a rarity that the child would rather prefer to play than eat. An adolescent should be trained and educated at a young age so that he develops the habit of healthy eating.
Training a child to eat healthy begins by treating him as an adult. It all begins with respect; the parents need to respect the child's desire for food. Children generally do not tend to eat unless they are hungry. Do not force them to eat and respect their wishes. Also many parents kind of bribe their child to eat or wash the dishes, like giving them a candy etc. They need to stop doing that. The one thing that can be done is to make sure that the child does not eat any junk food at least 1 to 2 hours before their meals.
Stick to a schedule daily. Serve lunch and dinner at the same time everyday followed with some fruit juice. Any other food items should be allowed only prior to 2 hours.
A child may sometimes find a new food repulsive because of its smell and shape. Just try to educate him about its benefits and tickle his fantasy if possible.
There are a few vegetables like bitter gourd, broccoli etc that needs to be prepared and presented so as to tempt a kid to relish on it. These vegetables although highly nutritional, are bitter in taste and a child despises that. To get him to eat those food items the preparation needs to be very crafty. A good sauce or dip will make it interesting; also cutting it in attractive shape may do the trick. Another thing you can do is devour the food in front of your kid, maybe he will get influenced. Also you can trick them by mixing these items in the food that they actually like.
Take them shopping for food items, especially fruits and vegetables. Ask his opinion on what he wants to eat and pick it; don't pick anything they didn't want in the first place. Also involve the child in every stage of preparing the food.
A child with a healthy diet and a healthy habit will definitely lead a disciplined life.
